The Meewasin River Valley
A breathtaking length of scenic trail found along the South Saskatchewan River, the Meewasin Valley is truly a pinnacle of the Saskatoon lifestyle. Touted as one of the top 10 greatest hikes in Canada by Reader’s Digest, it boasts over 80 KM of riverside to walk or cycle year-round. And the best part? It runs right through the centre of the city, meaning you can be on it within minutes from almost every neighbourhood!
It’s Always Sunny in Saskatoon
Well…almost. While we do see clouds and overcast skies, there’s a reason the city’s motto is “Saskatoon Shines!” One of the sunniest cities in Canada, Saskatoon sees an average of about 2,381 hours of sunshine every year—more than just about everywhere else. And though we might catch a lot of slack for the flat landscape, the endless horizon line just means we get to soak in the sun for longer!
Other Fun Facts About Saskatoon:
- We hold the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest snowball fight. On February 1st, 2016, 8,200 people made their way to Victoria Park to participate in the most epic snowball fight the world has ever seen.
- We’re the Paris of the Prairies. With 7 beautiful bridges found throughout Saskatoon, we’re often compared to the similarly bridge-heavy Paris. In fact, the bridges are often highlighted in artworks depicting the city, and any long-time resident will almost certainly have a favourite.
- We’re home to the longest-running Canadian archeological dig site. A true highlight of Saskatoon, Wanuskewin Heritage Park is a recognized national historic site celebrating over 6,000 years of First Nations’ culture in Canada. Not only does it offer irreplaceable examples of First Nations’ life on the prairies dating back thousands of years, but it has become a destination to explore it, with over 6 KM of trails winding throughout the land.
