6 Reasons to Love Living in Saskatoon

Named for the delicious berry found growing wild throughout the province, Saskatoon is Saskatchewan’s largest city with a population of over 270,000. Established in 1883, it has a long-standing reputation for its scenic beauty and friendly disposition that has drawn families for decades. And whether you’re one of those families living here already or possibly considering buying a home in Saskatoon, here are some more reasons to fall even more in love!

The City of Festivals

Often nicknamed the “City of Festivals,” Saskatoon is home to many, offering a little something for everyone throughout the year. In winter, take part in all the fun to be had at the Nutrien Wintershines Festival—from snow and ice sculptures to IglooFest—or take part in the annual Ice Cycle, dubbed as the “coldest bike ridge on the planet.” In sunny summer, take in the SaskJazz, Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan, Saskatoon Fringe Festival, or the beloved Saskatoon Exhibition. Plus, so many more events to keep you entertained year-long!

Greenspace Galore

Home to over 198 parks, it’s no wonder Saskatoon residents never feel the dreaded city claustrophobia. Not only offering more spaced-out living, there’s also always a green space to escape to every few blocks to find your moment in mother nature whenever you need it!

Entertainment Central

Saskatchewan’s largest indoor entertainment venue, the SaskTel Centre, can be found—you guessed it—right here in Saskatoon. Home-base for both the Saskatchewan Rush Lacrosse Team and Saskatoon Blades Hockey Team, sports fans love the convenience of catching the latest game live right in their own backyard. And for music buffs—the SaskTel Centre hosts tons of incredible artists year-round, including such names as Elton John, Celine Dion, Eric Church, and more!

Incredible Food Scene

Anyone who has visited Saskatoon has undoubtedly found themselves enjoying one of its countless dining establishments. With options for every palette, it offers some of the most incredible meals you can enjoy throughout the prairies and even some rated among the top in Canada! Particular highlights include 3 mouthwatering restaurants owned by Dale MacKay—the first-ever winner of Top Chef Canada—as well as Canada’s only drive-thru perogies found at Baba’s Homestyle Perogies.

The Meewasin River Valley

A breathtaking length of scenic trail found along the South Saskatchewan River, the Meewasin Valley is truly a pinnacle of the Saskatoon lifestyle. Touted as one of the top 10 greatest hikes in Canada by Reader’s Digest, it boasts over 80 KM of riverside to walk or cycle year-round. And the best part? It runs right through the centre of the city, meaning you can be on it within minutes from almost every neighbourhood!

It’s Always Sunny in Saskatoon

Well…almost. While we do see clouds and overcast skies, there’s a reason the city’s motto is “Saskatoon Shines!” One of the sunniest cities in Canada, Saskatoon sees an average of about 2,381 hours of sunshine every year—more than just about everywhere else. And though we might catch a lot of slack for the flat landscape, the endless horizon line just means we get to soak in the sun for longer!

Other Fun Facts About Saskatoon:

  • We hold the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest snowball fight. On February 1st, 2016, 8,200 people made their way to Victoria Park to participate in the most epic snowball fight the world has ever seen.
  • We’re the Paris of the Prairies. With 7 beautiful bridges found throughout Saskatoon, we’re often compared to the similarly bridge-heavy Paris. In fact, the bridges are often highlighted in artworks depicting the city, and any long-time resident will almost certainly have a favourite.

A true highlight of Saskatoon, Wanuskewin Heritage Park is a recognized national historic site celebrating over 6,000 years of First Nations’ culture in Canada. Not only does it offer irreplaceable examples of First Nations’ life on the prairies dating back thousands of years, but it has become a destination to explore it, with over 6 KM of trails winding throughout the land.
