Top Interior Design Trends for 2022

Much like in fashion, the interior design landscape is constantly changing. With each passing year, we see trends appear, evolve, and fade away, so it can always feel just out of reach for homeowners looking to keep up with the times. However, thanks to helpful forecasting based on current patterns (just as in the real estate market), interior designers can create a crystal ball of sorts to clue us in to what is on the rise for home decor in the year to come. And here are the interior design trends they are seeing for 2022:

Maximalism: More is More

While years past have emphasized minimalism and open-air designs, interior design in 2022 is calling for more when it comes to home decor. No longer are we looking for sleek lines and empty spaces; instead, homeowners should consider adding to their homes by layering textures. This creates a more cozy and intimate space that some believe is more comforting in the home-centric day and age in which we live—similar to the effects of a weighted blanket!

Regardless of how home decor designs are trending, though, minimalism is still critical if you are selling your home. Buyers need to be able to visualize themselves in the space. If there is too much going on, rather than feeling cozy and welcome, they may feel as though they are invading a personal space, making it hard to envision it as their own.

Grandmillennialsm: Not Going Away Any Time Soon

Speaking of more texture, it’s no wonder we’re seeing a continuation in the popularity of the grandmillennial decor trend. These styles of days-gone-by are known for their exaggerated patterns and aesthetics, making them a perfect fit for the more-is-more generation.

The motivation to continue this interior design trend seems to be heavily rooted in the millennial generation’s deep appreciation for all things vintage. Whether born out of sentimentality or sustainability (more on this in a moment), the vintage movement creates a newly revitalized sense of purpose for used items. It offers a bit of storytelling to every room above and beyond the store at which it was bought.

Earlier versions of the grandmillennial design trend leaned more heavily to the older, more European flair of the late 1800s. However, the new evolution seems to be more reminiscent of a 1940s home, with chintz-inspired wallpapers, ruffles, fringe, and statement furniture with eye-catching colours and designs.

Sustainability: Loving the Earth Inside Your Home

Not only are we seeing sustainable interior design in the repurposing of vintage decor, but we are also seeing it in the materials being used throughout 2022 homes. Being innately biophilic in nature—suggesting the instinctual human need to connect with nature—sustainable design choices emphasize the global focus on maintaining the earth while also helping to create a warmth in our homes that evokes an effortlessness and comfort typically found in nature.

So what exactly does sustainable home decor look like in 2022? Raw, porous, and unfinished are the buzzwords for this year. We’re seeing a resurgence of stonewares and woodgrains used throughout the home.

2022 Colour Trends: Warm & Natural

As with sustainability, the colour trends for 2022 also see an intensely naturalistic aesthetic. Shades of brown are particularly popular this year—cognacs, chocolates, and camels—as well as soft, warm tones of deep reds, yellows, and oranges. Muted greens are also still having their moment in this time, emphasizing comforting and relaxing tones that feel welcome. In fact, even the 2022 Pantone Colour of the Year, Very Peri, reflects this naturalistic need, being distinctly drawn from the colour of lavender (AKA: nature’s most relaxing flower).

Again, as with maximalism, if you are staging your home to sell, you’ll still want to stick with neutrals, especially when painting walls. This allows buyers to easily put their own design flair on the home when they move in—you will always have the chance to do it in your new home!

Double-Duty Rooms: Home Offices & Meditation Nooks

Though we had high hopes to only have a few weeks of the work-from-home lifestyle in 2020, here we are in 2022, with many still living this reality every day. While we may be getting more anxious to return to the office environment, many are using this opportunity to really settle into their home offices and create a dedicated space for work. No longer are we trying to make the coffee table or kitchen counter suffice. Instead, we maximize corners, transform large walk-in closets, or add desks to guest rooms.

Home offices aren’t the only thing we are creating room for in 2022, though. After seeing the success of dual-purpose spaces, many are looking to create a counterpart to their work-from-home environment: a meditation nook. These corners of the home offer a cozy sanctuary where you can relax and unwind, with comfy pillows and throws to curl into surrounded by uplifting decor. Most importantly, though, they are purposefully separated from the rest of the home—another indication that the open floor plan is on its way out.

Let’s Get Sculptural: Curved Furniture & Decor

Recent trends defined as “modernism” have highlighted and praised sharp, clean lines and crisp corners. However, interior design trends for 2022 are tracking a move to soft, sculptural curves instead. Believed to better show off a homeowner’s sense of style than the modular designs of late, couches, chairs, and artwork with sleek, smooth edges reminiscent of Michaelangelo’s work will be seen more and more in the new year!

Moving into the new year, interior design is welcoming many new faces to trends that have been holding firm over the past couple of years. Homes are becoming cozier and warmer—places where you don’t mind quarantining if needed. We are slowly bidding farewell to open floor plans, minimalism, all-white aesthetics, and squared-off decor. We do so while also ushering in the age of maximalism, earthy colours and decor, more dual-purpose spaces, and sculptural designs!
