5 Ways to Display Art

Are your walls looking barren—and you have no idea what to do with them? This blog is for you! Everyone has different design styles and tastes in the artwork. In contrast, some of us have a lot of pieces stored away, with no idea how to hang them. Take the first step and try these few ways to display art on your walls.

Arrange Large Artwork Alone

Large artwork pieces make their statement and can lean against a wall on the floor or on top of a fireplace mantel. Most oversized pieces already come finished either stretched on a canvas or created on metal with a wire ready to hang. Choose an artwork that fits the size of your room, and that will accentuate your style of the room.

Purchase a Frame that Compliments the Style of the Room

If you like smaller prints or paintings, frames can be a nice compliment to the artwork and the style of your room too. There are many inexpensive ways to achieve this look. The best way to achieve an affordable way to frame prints is to find ones that are a standard picture size, so custom framing is unnecessary. Many artists experiment with making prints and paintings that aren’t a standard size. If that is the case, there are a few workarounds, such as getting a custom matte to fit the frame. Cut the mattes to fit the unique-sized artwork. The other option is to get the artwork professionally matted to a standard-sized frame or matted and custom framed for that perfect finish. Floater frames are another great option for odd-sized artwork, creating a clear border around the print.

Create a Gallery Wall

More minor works of art can seem lonely on a wall by themselves: cluster similar prints and paintings like a gallery on one wall to create one significant focal point. If you enjoy an eclectic mix, take this opportunity to mix and match art, frames and sizes—try combining different artists and styles of art. If you prefer symmetry over a random assortment of art, purchase similar prints, frames and paintings and hang them in a symmetrical arrangement.

Lean Smaller Framed Artwork on Shelves on your Wall or Bookshelf

Another fabulous idea instead of hanging a bunch of artwork on your wall is to install “gallery” shelves or lean them on bookshelves. These options make the art feel more relaxed and refined, making it easy to layer frames to create depth. Layering can also create an exciting collage of prints rather than just an orderly collection. Try displaying artwork on a bookshelf, and showcase them with books and ornate objects to create small vignettes on every shelf.

Arrange the Artwork in Pairs

Decorating with pairs in mind is an excellent way to exhibit similar prints or the same artist’s work. If you choose this method, use the same frame type and size for symmetry.
